Even by the standards of the Greek islands, the beaches of Gavdos take some beating. It is hard not to be charmed by Sarakiniko, a large sandy beach located just over 1.5km from Gavdos’s main port, Karave. It is known that Saracen pirates once used the beach as a base for their attacks in the region. Occupying a big cove bay facing the north, Sarakiniko offers shallow water which is ideal for wading and soaking in the heavenly surroundings.

Depending on the time of year, you can also find taverns and a market. There is a site of historical interest near the beach – the house of Aris Velouchiotis; the exiled founder of the Greek Liberation Army.

And don’t forget about Tripiti beach – this is not only the southernmost tip of the Greek islands, but the whole of Europe. The beach is characterised by its three stone ‘arches’ at one end. This is a quiet location offering breathtaking vistas south towards Libya, and can be a good place to see migrating birds, depending on the season.
